Djamel Belmadi who is the head coach of the Algerian national team has explained that the plan they had for the Super Eagles in the AFCON 2019 semifinal worked for them.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Algeria on Sunday, July 14, in which Manchester City striker Riyad Mahrez scored the winner in additional time.
Belmadi has now revealed that his side knew Nigeria used Ahmed Musa and Samuel Chukwueze directly with lot of pace and had to block them.
The 43-year-old also admitted that the Super Eagles defenders are very good, but noted that they are not fast when you run at them as they struggle.
“We had to make a plan for Nigeria. We know that they used Musa & Chukwueze directly with a lot of pace. We tried to close those spaces.
”I also know that their defenders are very good, but not very fast. If you run at them, they struggle,” he explained.
